Tractor–trailer, car crash backs up northbound I–95
BY SCOTT SHENK
A crash involving a tractor–trailer and a car caused big backups on Interstate 95 Tuesday afternoon.
The crash happened at 2:17 p.m. on northbound I–95, according to Natatia Bledsoe with the Fredericksburg Police Department.
The tractor–trailer and a Mercedes collided near State Route 3 exit 130. The crash forced both vehicles off the interstate.
At least one lane and both shoulders were closed for some time. Southbound I–95 traffic was still crawling along after 6 p.m. According to VDOT, traffic flow was restored between 7 and 7:30 p.m.
The Mercedes ended up in the middle median, with the driver trapped. Emergency crews had to cut through the car to free the driver, who was taken to Mary Washington Hospital, according to Fredericksburg Fire Deputy Chief Mike Jones.
He said the truck driver was also taken to the hospital.
The truck jackknifed and ended up on the left shoulder leaking fuel. Crews cleared up the fuel spill, but it took several hours to clear the road.
