Police ID man in Fredericksburg shooting

The 42-year-old man killed in a double shooting Friday in Fredericksburg has been identified as Tyrone Charles Thornton.
Thornton died as the result of a shot to the head in his apartment just before 4 p.m. at the Fall Hill Apartments. A 24-year-old Woodford woman was shot in the chest during the same incident, police said. She remained hospitalized Saturday in serious condition.
The woman told police that Thornton shot her before turning the gun on himself, city police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said. The woman, Thornton’s former girlfriend, managed to leave the apartment and return to a waiting car before medical help arrived; she was taken to Mary Washington Hospital, where she underwent surgery Friday.
Bledsoe said it remains unclear why the woman went to Thornton’s home Friday or what led to the fatal argument, but said the woman used to live with Thornton before moving out in October.
Bledsoe said the woman was shot more than once and also had facial injuries consistent with being beaten. Waiting for her in the vehicle was a 43-year-old female relative from Woodford and the victim’s 2-year-old child. Police have gotten conflicting stories about whether the child was also Thornton’s.
Bledsoe said police are still investigating the incident, but so far have no reason to doubt what the woman told them before being rushed to surgery.
