A Culpeper County sheriff’s deputy responding to a call struck and killed a woman with his patrol car Wednesday night on U.S. 29, authorities said.
The deputy was on his way to a medical emergency when the incident occurred about a half-mile north of the Reva Park Market, authorities said.
According to authorities, witnesses described the woman as either standing, kneeling or lying in the southbound lane. They did not know why.
The incident occurred after dark, and authorities said the woman was wearing dark clothing. Authorities said the deputy had his emergency lights flashing and was going about 70 mph.
The Sheriff’s Office is investigating and is expected to provide more details later today.
