Homes evacuated from gas leak in city
UPDATE: City police report that all residents were allowed to return to their homes by 11:50 p.m.
Residents of several homes in the College Heights neighborhood in Fredericksburg were evacuated Monday night when a natural gas line was damaged by workers on a city water line.
The incident occurred about 10:20 p.m., in the 1400 block of Brent Street, according to Natatia Bledsoe, city police spokeswoman.
She said the homes were evacuated as a precautionary measure near the intersection of Brent Street and Rappahannock Avenue.
Workers from the Columbia Gas Co., were on the scene dealing with the leak, she said.
A city bus was sent to the area to accommodate those who had to leave their homes. They were expected to be out of their homes for a few hours.
