Last day to answer Letters to Santa call

Unless 40 generous folks step up by 2 p.m. Wednesday, dozens of needy youngsters won’t get sponsored through a local Letters to Santa program.

Organizers of that effort, operated by the local American Red Cross chapter, said that there are still about 40 children who haven’t been selected so far to get Christmas help.

Generous individuals, groups and organizations have adopted nearly 600 of the children whose families turned to the Red Cross program this season for holiday help. But these 40 are up against the sponsorship cutoff.

The program’s leaders noted that the letters from these children will be available for sponsorship through 2 Wednesday afternoon at the Red Cross office at 4836 Southpoint Parkway (in the shopping center near the Southpoint Cracker Barrel).

They noted that would-be sponsoring Santas can come there to choose a child, but don’t have to.

They can also call 735-0502 or send an email to letterstosanta@

“Letters” elves will be glad to help select a child for them, faxing or emailing the child’s Christmas-wish letter, along with program guidelines and deadlines.

Though the sponsorship opportunities close Wednesday, folks who adopt a needy child will have until Dec. 8 to shop and return gifts.

Organizers note that if any of children aren’t selected by this afternoon, they’ll go into a group that staffers will shop for beginning on Black Friday.

They note that because of that, there’s a need for monetary donations to help buy gifts for any children not sponsored.
