Baby found home alone, mother arrested

A Fredericksburg woman was arrested Monday after her 9-month-old son was found alone in a home in the Mayfield subdivision, police said.
Child Protective Services received an anonymous tip Monday afternoon that an infant had been left in the 300 block of Glover Street, city police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said.
The caller reported that the mother had left the home sometime Monday morning and regularly leaves the baby alone.
Police and CPS workers went to the home at 3 p.m. and heard a baby crying inside. After receiving no answer to their knocks, authorities forced their way into the house and found the baby in a back bedroom.
Bledsoe said the baby was strapped in a car seat that was on the floor and it was dark in the room.
Police returned to the residence later Monday and arrested the child’s mother. Chanta Wormley, 31, was charged with felony child neglect and placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.
The baby is in the care of the Department of Social Services and the investigation is continuing, Bledsoe said.
It was the second time in a week that a crying baby has been found alone by police.
Last week, Stafford authorities responded to a call at the Motel 6 on Warrenton Road and found a 6-month-old girl strapped in a car seat upside down on a bed. A “crack pipe” was in the room, and that baby later tested positive for cocaine.
