It’s still not clear what happened the night Evan Newsom died

BY KEITH EPPS

Two weeks have passed since a Stafford County deputy shot a 17-year-old boy to death in his home in nearby Fauquier County, and there have been no further updates on the investigation.

Evan Ford Newsom was killed Nov. 2 in the 12000 block of Tacketts Mill Road near the Stafford–Fauquier line. Police said Newsom attacked a deputy with a knife prior to being killed.

Initial press conferences revealed little about the incident, and state police spokesman Sgt. Les Tyler said Friday that he had not been authorized to say anything more. State police are handling the investigation at the request of Stafford and Fauquier officials.

According to initial police reports, the Fauquier Sheriff’s Office was called at 4 a.m. Nov. 2 for a single-vehicle crash at the intersection of Tacketts Mill and Aquia roads in Fauquier, a short distance from the Stafford line.

No one was in the car, which was in a ditch. The investigation led police to a residence about a half-mile away. Deputies from both Stafford and Fauquier went to the home. Stafford deputies entered the home while the Fauquier deputies waited outside.

An altercation followed, which resulted in minor wounds for a deputy, who has not been identified. Police have given no details about what led to the altercation or why there was such a heavy police response to a minor traffic incident.

According to his obituary, Newsom was buried Monday at Quantico National Cemetery. He was a senior at Liberty High School in southern Fauquier and was planning to attend college after graduation. Police initially referred to Newsom as a Stafford resident, but the obituary states that he lived in Fauquier and died at his home.

Stafford authorities have refused to comment publicly on the incident, referring all questions to state police. But one official said privately that he expects the investigation to reveal that the deputy acted appropriately.
