Stafford man charged after fight in store

A Stafford man was arrested Thursday following a fight in a grocery store during which a baby was nearly knocked onto the floor, police said.
The incident occurred about 6:52 p.m. at the Food Lion at 905 Garrisonville Road. Sheriff’s spokesman Bill Kennedy said the victim was at the deli counter with his family, including a baby in a car carrier on top of a shopping cart.
The victim told police that a man pushed the cart into him as he squeezed by. He said something to the man as he moved the cart back where it was, and the man yelled at him.
Witnesses said the man then kicked the cart and the victim had to catch the carrier to keep the baby from hitting the floor.
The victim said the attacker then punched him and the two men fought until store employees were able to separate them.
The man left the store but one of the employees knew who he was.
Stafford Sheriff’s Sgt. Bill Walker went to a home on Choptank Road and arrested 48-year-old Donald Eugene Quash and charged him with assault and battery.
Kennedy said Quash and the victim had differing stories on who started the fight, but witnesses supported the victim’s version.
Quash was placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
