Colonial Beach residents will get to ask questions of candidates running for local government positions this week.
A forum for candidates for Town Council and School Board will be held Tuesday. Four candidates—Tim Curtin, Tommy Edwards, Jim Chiarello and Wanda Goforth—are seeking four council seats on the Nov. 6 ballot. All but Goforth are incumbents.
A forum for the two candidates for mayor—current Councilman Mike Ham and former Councilman Steve Kennedy—will be Wednesday.
The forums will take place at the Town Center from 7–9 p.m. and will be moderated by the Colonial Beach Foundation and the Colonial Beach Chamber of Commerce.
Residents may submit questions until 15 minutes before both forums.
Each candidate will have the opportunity to make opening remarks for three minutes and closing remarks for two.
Peter Fahrney, president of the foundation, will serve as a moderator both nights. He said candidates will have the opportunity to respond to a question for two minutes, then the other candidates will have a minute and a half to rebut.
Each candidate will be given the chance to lead in responding to at least one question from residents.
Fahrney said he has received questions so far that cover topics such as a candidates’ visions, town finances, priorities and personal issues. Residents are curious about candidates’ backgrounds and where they live in the town, he said.
General questions for all candidates and questions for specific candidates are welcomed.
Colonial Beach Chamber of Commerce President Carey Geddes will also serve as a moderator both nights.
Residents are invited to send questions for candidates to email@example.com or to the chamber at firstname.lastname@example.org. Attendees are advised to arrive early for both forums.
