Stafford Airport construction to start

BY BILL FREEHLING

Construction of a new, permanent terminal building at  Stafford Regional Airport will start soon.

Everything is ready for the start of construction, said airport manager Ed Wallis.

Curtis Contracting Inc., based in West Point, is the general contractor for the 10,000-square-foot building.

A formal groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Oct. 16. Construction is expected to last about 10 months.

The $3.4 million facility will include a passenger lounge, business center, conference room, flight planning and pilots’ area, administrative offices, vending machines and restrooms.

The Stafford Regional Airport Authority is financing the project through about $2 million in grants from the Virginia Department of Aviation and a $1.4 million loan from Stafford County to be repaid over 25 years.

The permanent structure will replace the double-wide trailer that currently serves as the airport’s terminal. Airport officials say the think the new facility will help attract businesses that may use the airport  for work-related travel.
