Single-car crash kills Fauquier teen
A 16-year-old Fauquier County boy is dead and his 14-year-old sister is in serious condition after the car in which they were riding struck a tree Monday morning.
The driver of the vehicle, a 17-year-old youth, was not injured in the crash, which occurred about 7:30 a.m. on State Route 644 between Catlett and Bealeton.
All three are from Catlett and are students at Liberty High School, where they were heading.
According to Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller, the driver was westbound on Route 644 when he apparently ran off the right side of the road and then overcorrected.
He then lost control of his 1996 Toyota Camry, crossed the highway and struck a tree on the left side.
Ian T. Heflin, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, died at the scene. His sister, Brianna E. Heflin, who was sitting in the back seat, was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital for treatment.
All three teenagers were wearing seat belts, Geller said.
Charges are pending in the accident.
State trooper R.W. Marshall is investigating the crash.
