Leeland commuter lot addition now open
BY SCOTT SHENK
Commuters in Stafford and Caroline counties got some good news on parking this week.
Starting today in Stafford, Virginia Railway Express riders will have a new paved parking area to use at the Leeland Station lot. The state-funded $2.2 million expansion adds 196 spaces to the lot, pushing the total to 845.
Officials with VRE, along with elected officials from Stafford and the state, held a grand-opening ceremony Tuesday in the new section.
“We’re staying ahead of the demand” for commuter parking, Stafford Supervisor Paul Milde said.
While the expansion is adding spaces, officials aren’t sure they’ll be able to keep using the overflow gravel lot at Leeland. Milde said they are negotiating with the property owner.
Another VRE parking expansion project, at the Brooke Road VRE lot, is moving along, Milde said.
That $2.2 million project will add 230 spaces, which are scheduled to open in November.
In Caroline, commuters who use carpools and vanpools will soon have a dedicated park-and-ride option.
The George Washington Regional Commission voted Monday night to lease 25 spaces at the Ladysmith Professional Building in the Ladysmith Business Park off State Route 639, within a mile of Interstate 95’s Exit 110.
The GWRC will lease the spaces for $1 per weekday.
The lease begins Oct. 1 and runs through September 2013.
