Children struck by vehicle in Fredericksburg
By KEITH EPPS
A teenage boy and his 4-year-old brother escaped serious injury Wednesday when a bicycle they were riding on pulled into the path of a turning car and was struck, police said.
The incident occurred about 5:20 p.m. at the corner of Howison Avenue and McKinney Street in the Mayfield subdivision of Fredericksburg, city police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said.
A 15-year-old boy had his little brother on the front of the bike when he suddenly rode in front of the car, witnesses told police.
The man driving the car was going about 10 mph, Bledsoe said.
Both boys were taken to Mary Washington Hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Bledsoe said neither boy was wearing a helmet, and police said the older boy grabbed his brother as they were going down, cushioning his fall.
Bledsoe said it was “very fortunate” that the injuries weren’t serious.
The driver of the car was not charged, Bledsoe said. He remained at the scene and did everything he was supposed to do, she said.
