A 22-year-old woman was grabbed by a man in a car Saturday morning as she was jogging in Fredericksburg, police said.

City police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said the incident occurred about 8 a.m. in the neighborhood near the Oak Hill cemetery. The woman, who had just moved into the city off Cowan Boulevard Friday, was running on Westmont Drive near Highland Road when a man pulled up in a vehicle and said something to her.

Bledsoe said the woman couldn’t understand what the man was saying, so she moved to the passenger’s side of the vehicle. The suspect then opened the passenger-side door and grabbed the woman, pulling her partially into the car.

The woman, who was not injured, pulled away from the man and ran away. She got onto State Route 3 and ran to the Pohanka Collision Center at Lafayette Boulevard and the Blue and Gray Parkway, where she felt safe enough to stop and call police.

Police estimated that about 15 minutes passed between the time of the attack and the time police were called. Bledsoe said the victim was unfamiliar with the area and would have run into open businesses much sooner had she turned left onto Route 3 instead of right.

The suspect was described as a Hispanic male in his 50s with a stocky build, short dark hair and an unshaven face. The victim reported that he had bad teeth and dirty fingernails, and he spoke limited English with a heavy accent.

He was driving an older white car with four doors and was last seen on Highland Road. Bledsoe said police will get with the victim soon in an effort to come up with a composite drawing.

Anyone with information is asked to call city police at 373-3122.
