School dressing days coming up
BY LINDLEY ESTES
The Interfaith Community Council will hold its annual School Dressing Days event at Bragg Hill Family Life Center in Fredericksburg this Friday and Saturday.
During the event, area children in need will be given a new pair of jeans, a new shirt, underwear, socks, shoes and school supplies for the new school year.
Last year 1,600 people came to School Dressing Days, compared with 1,400 the year before.
Families from Fredericksburg as well as the counties of Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George and Caroline may participate.
Eligible children from preschool through high school can receive clothing and school supplies at no cost. Children must have identification, which could be a report card, Social Security card, birth certificate or Medicaid card, and be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Adults must bring verification of residence in the area. That can be a driver’s license, DMV identification card, lease, utility bill or letter from a social services department.
Becky Paul, co-chair of the Interfaith Community Council, said that donations of new underwear, especially boys and men’s boxers, and backpacks are especially needed and can be brought to Bragg Hill today from 9 a.m. to noon and Thursday from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Paul also said the event needs used clothes for kids in kindergarten through 12th grade, especially clothes for little boys.
There is also a need for volunteers on Thursday to help set up the event, and to aid shoppers on Friday and Saturday.
This was the first year that the Interfaith Community Council held preregistration to help streamline the giveaway days.
Even though sign-up times are closed, people in need of clothing and school supplies who did not preregister can still come to School Dressing Days between 1 and 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Paul said the council, a coalition of area churches, will accept monetary donations as well, and that those donations go to purchase whatever has not been donated for the children but is still needed.
