Man charged in Spotsylvania attack, robbery
Spotsylvania County authorities have charged a man who they say assaulted and robbed a woman early Thursday morning.
Police responded to the 5900 block of Danielle Drive for a report of a disturbance, according to a press release from the Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies arrived and found a 21-year-old woman who, police say, had been attacked and robbed by a man she had dated in the past.
“The victim was attending a party at this location and decided to leave after [the suspect] would not stop bothering her,” according to the press release. “When she attempted to leave [the suspect] poured a bottle of wine over her head and spit at her.”
Police say the woman got into the passenger seat of a friend’s vehicle and that the suspect tried to pull her out. When he was unable to get her out of the car, police said, he took her purse by force. And as the friend was driving away, police say, the suspect threw a wine bottle at the vehicle, causing the windshield to break.
The suspect fled the area, police say, but was later arrested. The woman’s purse was recovered, though some of the belongings were missing. She suffered only minor injuries.
Darnell Leon Mitchell, 32, charged with assault and battery, robbery, attempted abduction, and throwing a missile at an occupied vehicle. He was held under no bond.
