An early morning bicycle ride may have helped Spotsylvania County authorities solve at least nine recent burglaries, police said.
Members of the Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Units were conducting surveillance in the area of Courtland Commons early Thursday when they saw a young man riding a bicycle in the middle of the road, 1st. Sgt. James Konicki said.
They stopped the bike rider, and while questioning him Detective Leonard Short got evidence regarding a series of recent burglaries in the area.
Konicki said that since May there have been multiple reports of nighttime burglaries at businesses in the Courtland Commons and Hilltop areas. Pizza and Chinese restaurants, a convenience store and a nails salon are among the businesses that have been hit.
Konicki said the Fas Mart at Courtland Commons has been broken into twice. Among the items taken have been cash and cigarettes.
Floyd Horace Shelton Sutton, 19, of Spotsylvania was charged with three counts of nighttime burglary and was placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
Konicki said the investigation is continuing and more charges are expected.
