A Maryland woman reported that she was robbed late Friday while seeking advice on a motel room in Fredericksburg, police said.
The 56-year-old woman had come to visit Fredericksburg for the day with her puppy, city police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said. The woman said she was walking her dog after having dinner at a downtown restaurant when she approached a young man about 11:40 p.m. in the 1500 block of Prince Edward Street.
She said she asked the man for a recommendation regarding a motel or hotel that would allow her to keep her dog with her. She walked with him a short distance before the man grabbed her and took her wallet and car keys out of her back pocket. The wallet contained about $100 cash and credit cards.
He also tore the woman’s clothing, and her torn pants were in her hands when police arrived. A resident in that area who had heard the woman yelling for help called 911. The woman, who was not injured, was taken to police headquarters, where she was picked up by a relative.
The suspect is described as a black man in his 20s, 5 feet 8 inches tall with a thin build. He was wearing all dark clothing. Anyone with information is asked to call city police at 373-3122.
