Utilities chipping away at outage numbers
The estimated number of homes and businesses still without power in the Fredericksburg area following Friday’s violent storms has dropped to 6,588 customers as of 9:15 p.m. today. The number includes customers of Dominion Virginia Power and Rappahannock, Northern Virginia and Northern Neck cooperatives. The number was 11,710 at 7:15 a.m. today and 8,205 at 5 p.m.

COOLING CENTERS/SHOWERS
STAFFORD COUNTY: Stafford has opened a new cooling center at Gayle Middle School, 100 Panther Drive, Stafford, VA 22406. Residents can cool off, have a drink and take a shower. Shelter officials ask that individuals bring their own bath essentials. The shelter will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and Wednesday.
The Massad branch of the Rappahannock Area YMCA has opened its doors for showers for citizens without power. The YMCA requests that visitors show a valid photo id and provide basic address information. Citizens are welcome today and Thursday as the YMCA will be closed on Wednesday, July 4. The YMCA is open today and Thursday from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. The Massad YMCA is located at 212 Butler Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22405.
WATER
In King George, the public can go to Fire Company 1 775-8900 or 2/Dahlgren 663-3252 to fill water containers. Call first: Crews may be out on calls and not in station. King George County’s cooling shelter is open today at the Citizens Center, 8076 Kings Highway, until 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The King George YMCA has opened its showers to the public.
In Orange, because of continuing power outages and high temperatures, the Orange Rescue Squad is offering water to the public for drinking, pets and toilets. The squad’s station is located at 151 Berryhill Road. Residents will need to bring their own containers. The Orange Rescue Squad is also still available as a cooling center for those with specific medical needs. For more information, call 540/672-1234.
STORM DEBRIS
IN FREDERICKSBURG: City crews will make a special collection of refuse beginning on Friday, July 9 and ending Wednesday, July 13. Various types of refuse will be taken in small quantities only and articles larger than 16 cubic feet and heavier than 75 pounds will not be collected. All loose trash must be bagged, boxed, or tied for easy handling. All refuse must be placed at the curb no later than 7:30 am, Monday, July 9. Subscription to the city’s regular trash service is not required for this special collection and there is no charge for this service.

Paints
Brush piles
Hazardous materials
Building materials
IN SPOTSYLVANIA: Due to clean-up following recent storm activity, the Livingston Landfill Convenience Center, Chancellor Convenience Center and Berkeley Convenience Center will temporarily remain open one hour longer for collection of brush, trees (no stumps, or construction debris) and yard waste, until 7 p.m. on the following days:

NOTE: these facilities, other convenience centers, and the Livingston Landfill will be CLOSED Wednesday, July 4, 2012, as previously scheduled, in observance of the Independence Day holiday. Normal operating hours for all sites, from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m., will resume on Saturday, July 7, 2012.
