Here’s the latest on power outages, cooling shelters, etc.
As we enter the third day of this derecho-related power outage, the number of homes and businesses without power continues to drop.
As it stands right now (9 p.m. on Monday), here are the estimated outage totals by county for customers of Dominion Virginia Power and Rappahannock, Northern Virginia and Northern Neck electric cooperatives:
Caroline: 119 customers
Culpeper: 388 customers
Fauquier: 3,632 customers
Fredericksburg: 698 customers
King George: 1375 customers
Louisa: 631 customers
Orange: 1,913 customers
Spotsylvania: 715 customers
Stafford: 5,714 customers
Westmoreland: 17 customers
REGIONAL TOTAL: 15,202
In the immediate aftermath of Friday night’s storms, more than 100,000 homes and businesses in the region were without power. The number was 28,188 at 8:30 a.m. Monday. The total at noon was 27,177. The total at 4:45 p.m. was 22,107.

A few more tidbits:
STORM DEBRIS IN FREDERICKSBURG: City crews will make a special collection of refuse beginning on Friday, July 9 and ending Wednesday, July 13. Various types of refuse will be taken in small quantities only and articles larger than 16 cubic feet and heavier than 75 pounds will not be collected. All loose trash must be bagged, boxed, or tied for easy handling. All refuse must be placed at the curb no later than 7:30 am, Monday, July 9. Subscription to the city’s regular trash service is not required for this special collection and there is no charge for this service.
Items that will NOT be collected include:
Fredericksburg officials have announced that Old Mill Park and Dorothy Hart Community Center will be closed today because of the power outage. The city will open the field house at Maury Stadium from 4-8 p.m. today for people who need to take a shower. The cooling center at Hugh Mercer Elementary will be open today from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
In King George, the public can go to Fire Company 1 775-8900 or 2/Dahlgren 663-3252 to fill water containers. Call first: Crews may be out on calls and not in station. King George County’s cooling shelter is open today at the Citizens Center, 8076 Kings Highway, until 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The King George YMCA has opened its showers to the public.
In Orange, because of continuing power outages and high temperatures, the Orange Rescue Squad is offering water to the public for drinking, pets and toilets. The squad’s station is located at 151 Berryhill Road. Residents will need to bring their own containers. The Orange Rescue Squad is also still available as a cooling center for those with specific medical needs. For more information, call 540/672-1234.
Culpeper County has a temporary cooling center open until 4:30 p.m. at the Culpeper United Methodist Church on Oaklawn Drive.
Stafford and Spotsylvania have not opened any cooling shelters today.
Stafford will reopen a cooling shelter on Tuesday, 11 a.m. – 7 p.m., at Gayle Middle School, 100 Panther Drive. Showers will be available.
Caroline is opening a water fill site at the Community Services Center (17202 Richmond Turnpike) south of Bowling Green and on Allen Street (behind the Diversified Learning Center) in Ladysmith for those without power. Bring own containers. Info:804.633.4390
IN SPOTSYLVANIA: Due to clean-up following recent storm activity, the Livingston Landfill Convenience Center, Chancellor Convenience Center and Berkeley Convenience Center will temporarily remain open one hour longer for collection of brush, trees (no stumps, or construction debris) and yard waste, until 7 p.m. on the following days:
