Fireworks still on, officials say
UPDATE: 8 P.M. The fireworks will go on as scheduled, said Kathy Smith, spokeswoman for Spotsylvania County. The county received the all-clear weatherwise, she said.
The fireworks will start at about 9:15 p.m., or as soon as it is dark. Vendors will also be back outside at the site and everyone is welcome to come back to enjoy the event.
She said the storms seem to be moving to the south, not toward where the event is being held.
Despite the threat of an impeding thunderstorm, Spotsylvania officials have not cancelled tonight’s fireworks show at the county’s Stars and Stripes Spectactular event.
County spokeswoman Kathy Smith said officials expect that the storm will just pass through and will make a call about the fireworks show after the storm.
Just after 6 p.m., officials told the smaller-than-usual crowd that storms were about a half hour out and that everyone needed to seek shelter as soon as possible.
The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Spotsylvania, Fredericksburg, King George, and the surrounding area until 7:30 p.m.
Vendors started packing up their tents and event-goers headed inside the buildings.
