A Spotsylvania man was arrested early Thursday after he broke into two vehicles outside a Fredericksburg motel before wrecking his minivan on a nearby retaining wall, police said.
Fredericksburg police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said officers went to the Super 8 Motel at 3002 Mall Court at 12:20 a.m. in response to a report of a vehicle straddling the wall between the Super 8 and the Best Western.
The van’s driver was gone, but police got his description from a motel clerk who had spoken to him when he tried to check in earlier in the evening.
While investigating the accident, officers found broken windows in two vehicles belonging to motel guests. Property that had been taken from one of the vehicles was found in the crashed van; nothing was missing from the other vehicle.
The van driver was found walking in the parking lot of the Best Western a short time later. The man, who police said was hightly intoxicated, was taken into custody without incident.
Robert Sanchez, 37, was charged with public intoxication, larceny from a vehicle and two counts of destruction of property. Sanchez, who was also wanted in Chesterfield on an assault and battery charge, was placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
