Culpeper incident results in arrest

BY DONNIE JOHNSTON

A Jeffersonton man faces several charges after he allegedly confronted a couple at a Culpeper convenience store Wednesday afternoon and pulled a gun during the incident.

Dominique Jamaal Newsome, 22, who lives on Scottsville Road, has been charged with felony vandalism and misdemeanor brandishing a firearm and assault, according to town public information officer Wally Bunker.

The incident began about 3 o’clock at the 7–Eleven on North Main Street.

A couple in their early 20s went into the store to make purchases and when they returned to their SUV they were confronted by a group of men, Bunker said.

One of the men, later identified as Newsome, inquired about the whereabouts of a friend and the male victim replied that he did not know where that person was.

At that point Newsome allegedly kicked the driver’s side door of the vehicle, a rented Dodge Durango, then pulled a handgun from his waistband and broke out the door window, Bunker said. The couple got in the vehicle and, after driving over a curb to get away, headed to Walmart. The men followed, Bunker said.

Finally the couple drove to the town police station nearby to seek help.

Sheriff’s deputies searched for Newsome, who eventually turned himself in to town police Wednesday night.

Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $1,000, Bunker said.
