Police charge four in thefts from Walmart

BY KEITH EPPS

Four North Carolina residents had their trip to Washington cut short Sunday when they were caught stealing from two Stafford County Walmarts, police said.

Sheriff’s spokesman Bill Kennedy said Deputy Brandon Gates went to the Walmart on Garrisonville Road in North Stafford about 4:20 p.m. in response to a theft complaint. Gates stopped a minivan that was leaving the area; inside the van were the four people and numerous items from the store.

Kennedy said the investigation showed that the same group had taken items earlier Sunday from the Walmart on U.S. 17 in southern Stafford.

Among the items pilfered were games, clothing, makeup, electronics and a water filter. The people used electric carts to haul items out of the store, then brought some of the items back into the store and exchanged them for gift cards and cash.

Kennedy said hundreds of items worth more than $2,000 were taken from the Stafford stores.

Christopher Callicutt, 38, Tiffany Callicutt, 30, Terry Beitzel, 59, and Renee Beitzel, 52, all of Asheboro, N.C., were charged with multiple counts of petty larceny, conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretenses.

Kennedy said the group is also being investigated in thefts from other Walmarts between North Carolina and Stafford.
