Louisa investigates possible murder-suicide
By PORTSIA SMITH
Louisa County authorities are investigating what appears to be a domestic-related murder-suicide.
Police responded to a home in the 1800 block of Mt. Airy Road around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday for reports of a shooting.
Maj. Donald Lowe of the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office said deputies found the bodies of a man and a woman who both suffered from gunshot wounds. The man’s wound appeared to be self-inflicted, he said.
The victims were identified as 43-year-old Carol Ann Setchfield of Louisa and 47-year-old Jerry Persinger of Fluvanna County.
Lowe said Setchfield and Persinger had some type of relationship, but did not live in the same residence. Setchfield lived in the home where the bodies were found with her two sons, ages 17 and 23.
Lowe said the youngest son dialed 911 to report the shooting. Lowe said the case has not been officially ruled as a murder-suicide yet pending the results of the investigation.
Lowe said he had known Setchfield for over 20 years and she was once his next-door neighbor.
“If there was ever a definition of the perfect mother, it would be her,” he said. “She was a community-oriented person and she really loved her children.” Lowe said it’s shocking that something like this happened in such a small, quiet area. “But its even worse when it’s someone you know,” he said.
