Bumpass woman killed in crash

A Louisa County woman was killed Friday afternoon when the car she was riding in struck a tree.

According to a release from the Virginia State Police, troopers responded to a single vehicle accident shortly after 2 p.m. on  Belsches Road, just west of Bagby Road in Louisa County.

The crash occured when the driver of a 2010 Toyota Prius, heading westbound, ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree, police said.

The driver, 72-year-old William F. Martin of Bumpass, was wearing his seatbelt and was flown by helicopter to Mary Washington Hospital with serious life-threatening injuries.

His wife, 71-year-old Gail A. Martin died at the scene.

The Louisa County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the ongoing state police investigation.
