A wonderful young lady, Emily Ginter, went to be with the Lord suddenly this past weekend. She has been an encouragement to so many. She served Christ in all aspects of her life. Many may know her from Mars Hill events as she led in worship music a number of times, but that is a very small sample of her loving service to the Lord. She served faithfully at her home church and led many to Christ on countless mission trips and just the way she lived each day. Anyone who has known her knows of her contagious smile and genuine love for the Lord and others. But as beautiful of a person as she was on earth, we know she is now even more beautiful in the presence of our Lord singing to Him and dancing on streets of gold!

A memorial service will be held at New Life Ministries on Saturday, June 15, at 1 p.m. The church is preparing for a large gathering, so please come join this celebration of Emily’s life. The church address: New Life Ministries, 2800 McKinney Blvd. (Rt. 205), Colonial Beach, VA 22443.

In lieu of flowers, the family believes Emily would have preferred any gifts be given to any one of her favorite places:

King George County’s Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services will use a state grant to buy a new vehicle for use by volunteers.

Because King George doesn’t have a fire academy, its volunteers often travel to Richmond, LaPlata, Md., or beyond for classes, said Chief David Moody. He asked permission from the King George Board of Supervisors on Tuesday to spend $17,728 of grant funds on a 2013 Chevrolet Impala for them to drive. Currently, volunteers use their own vehicles or county response vehicles with emergency equipment.

The board agreed with the purchase, stating the vehicle took priority over other items such as turnout gear.

“I think it’s important that we send a message to our volunteers,” said Supervisor Joe Grzeika. “We do want to minimize any extra costs for them.”

The fire and rescue department also is working with County Attorney Eric Gregory to update its mutual aid agreements with surrounding counties, as well as the Navy base in Dahlgren and companies in Maryland across the Potomac River.

Thomas Cue, district manager at the King George Landfill, continues to provide information about a vertical expansion of the landfill. On Tuesday, he presented some enhanced photos, showing how much of the expansion would be seen from points along State Route 3 as well as in some neighborhoods around the landfill.

Here’s his presentation. WASTE MANAGEMENT PRESENTATION – Tom Cue

Supervisors are supposed to arrange a time this summer to look at other landfills in Virginia that rise more than 300 feet in the air. If the county approves the expansion, the King George landfill would be 370 feet with a 100-acre plateau on top.

Look for an upcoming story about the plans online and in The Free Lance-Star.

King George Landfill plans its annual shredder day on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. No businesses are allowed, but all residents can bring documents, bills and other paper items to be shredded.

On Tuesday, Supervisor John LoBuglio asked if the documents will be shredded in front of the residents who brought them.

“No, we don’t shred it, we just throw it away,” quipped District Manager Thomas Cue.

He was kidding.

He said residents could stay to watch the shredding if they wanted, but they’d see everyone else’s paper being shredded, too. It’s all put in a big pile and shredded before the company contracted to provide the service leaves for the day, Cue said. No items submitted for shredding are taken off the property, he said.

Also on Saturday, the landfill will collect items for the food pantry operated by the King George Department of Social Services.
