Brooks: Let them eat lunch
King George Supervisor Cedell Brooks Jr. doesn’t like the notion that a child who doesn’t have money for a school lunch is given a cheese sandwich and milk.
He wants them to have the same lunch as every other child—and he’s putting his money where his mouth is. Brooks said he plans to put $500 into a fund at King George Elementary School for children who don’t have money for lunches and apparently don’t qualify for free or reduced ones.
He challenged fellow supervisors and residents to help as well, saying that $72 will pay for an elementary school student’s lunch for a month.
Brooks also thanked all those who called, visited or sent cards during his recent illness. He passed out while driving Aug. 4 and was hospitalized for four days. Doctors said the incident wasn’t caused by a seizure, his heart or a stroke he had in 2010.
“I appreciate your support,” he said.
