Residents claim unclaimed funds
King George and Westmoreland County residents recovered $7,506 in cash and stock on Oct. 7 during a Virginia Treasury unclaimed property event.
The “Finding the Money” event was hosted by King George Triad and AARP at the Citizens Center in King George. A presentation was provided to explain what unclaimed property is, how residents can claim it and how to avoid scams that may be associated with the program.
During the three-hour event, about 60 people met with the treasury representatives and checked their names and those of their family members in data base. On average, one in every four names is a match, according to treasury officials.
“Quite a few skeptics in the crowd left with big smiles after finding unclaimed funds,” said Karen Richards, a sergeant in the King George Sheriff’s Office and law enforcement liaison with Triad, a crime prevention program for seniors.
