Dahlgren Navy wife part of international music competition
Dahlgren Navy wife Christina Williams is one of 12 international finalists in Operation Rising Star, a singing competition sponsored by U.S. Army Entertainment.
She is married to Cody Williams, a fire controlman third class stationed at the Aegis Training and Readiness Center at the Navy base in Dahlgren.
Christina Williams is the only U.S. Navy entry to make the finals and one of two military spouses in the competition. She was notified that she was in the Top 12 on Nov. 13.
Williams plans to leave King George County this weekend to travel to San Antonio and begin preparation for the finals. She will compete live against 11 other contestants from military bases around the world.
The competition will be aired on the Pentagon channel and streamed on the Internet at 8 nightly on Dec. 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17.
Public vote will count for 50 percent of the winner’s score, and voting will be open for two hours after each performance.
A native of Covington, Tenn., William is 20 and has been a Navy wife for six months. Her parents and two younger sisters in Kentucky are big supporters, according to a press release from the Navy base.
“I have been singing since I was a little girl, but I started singing publicly when I was a junior in high school. I sang in school and was a member of my church choir,” Williams said. “I also sang at the Opera Memphis Summer Conservatory and the Orpheum Memphis Summer Institute. I would sing to open events held in and around town.”
Williams credited her vocal coach, Dr. Sandra Franks, and her family for motivating her to sing.
“If it wasn’t for the inspiration from my mother, I would not be singing at all. My mom has pushed me when I thought I wasn’t good enough to do much at all,” she said.
The winner of the competition gets a recording session at a professional studio and a cash prize. Williams would like to become a recording artist and perform a mixed style of show tunes and pop music. A clip of Williams’ performance and more information is available here.
