The financial impact of the Navy base

The Navy base at Dahlgren employs 7,598 people and had a budget of more than $3.84 billion in 2011.

That’s according to a May 1, 2012, report from the Naval Support Facility Dahlgren. It was presented Wednesday during a joint meeting between between base officials and King George County supervisors.

Here are some interesting figures from that report, according to 2012 employment data and Fiscal Year 2011 Economic Impact Summary.

Civilian employees: 4,691

Military employees: 370

Contractors on the base: 2,537

Total contracts: $2.24 billion

Local contracts: $628 million

The Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division, is by far the biggest employer with 3,363 civilians, 10 military and 1,997 contractors.

The NSWC also has the biggest payroll: $331 million for civilians and $1.1 million for military. Its total contracts for fiscal year 2011 totaled $894 million. Of that amount, $546 million was in local contracts.

The Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense Field Activity had the most contracts: $1.26 billion in total contracts and $26 million in local contracts.
