County plans park at old landfill

King George County wants to turn an old landfill into a park with ball fields and walking trails, a tennis court and pavilion.

But unlike the well-known Virginia Beach park called Mount Trashmore—where layers of waste and soil were compacted 60 feet high—the proposed park at Purkins Corner would have a bowl effect.

“This really is a different kind of park,” said Tim Smith said, director of the King George Parks and Recreation Department. “It’s kind of neat.”
