On Tuesday, the Department of Social Services will sponsor its annual Thanksgiving giveaway of turkey dinner and all the fixings—for 400 families.

The department matches donors who want to help with families who need it. Donors will deliver the foodstuffs to the Masonic Lodge on U.S. 301 between 8 a.m. and noon, and families comes to retrieve the boxes at 1 p.m.

“It is a massive effort,” said Dave Coman, department director. “The same event happens at Christmas. It is an all-day affair.”

Two years ago, a photographer and I did a story on the activity. At that time, the department helped 371 families—its biggest effort in its 20-year history. Guess it’s no surprise that this year’s program is even bigger.
