Cooling shelter open this weekend

The county will open a cooling shelter this weekend for anyone needing relief from extreme temperatures.

The weekend shelter will be located at the King George Fire and Rescue headquarters on State Route 3. It will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The shelter will provide an air-conditioned sitting area and cold drinking water. No food is provided, and no pets are allowed.

Officials will evaluate the conditions next week and reopen the shelter if needed. Anyone with questions can call 775-8900.

No one has come to the county’s shelter for relief in this most recent stretch of searing heat, said Lt. Steven Lynd.
