The Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in locating a 23-year-old man who fled on foot Thursday when deputies arrived in southern Stafford to arrest him on property-theft charges.
The man was not initially considered armed or dangerous, but late Thursday was believed to be carrying a pocket knife or box cutter, Spotsylvania Capt. Jeff Pearce said.
A Fairfax County police helicopter searched from the sky for hours on Thursday morning and could be seen from both Fredericksburg and Stafford.
Spotsylvania detectives were attempting to serve arrest warrants on Matthew William Jones, 23, about 8 a.m. when he took off on foot, Pearce said.
Jones fled the area of Rodney Lane in the Chatham Heights area of southern Stafford, not far from the Rappahannock River, according to information from Pearce and Stafford Sheriff’s Office spokesman Bill Kennedy.
Stafford authorities were notified ahead of the arrest attempt and then took the lead in the search for Jones after he fled on foot.
By 5 p.m., deputies had become convinced that he was no longer in that vicinity.
Detectives were attempting to serve eight warrants, Pearce said. Three were for charges of breaking and entering and five were for failing to appear in court on charges of receiving stolen goods.
All of the alleged crimes occurred earlier this year, Pearce said.
Jones is a black male, 6-feet, 5-inches tall, weighing about 185 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes and is known to frequent Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania, Pearce said.
Jones was last seen wearing dark-colored basketball shorts and no shirt, Kennedy said.
Anyone with information about Jones’ whereabouts is asked to call the Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Office at 540/582-7115 or the Stafford Sheriff’s Office at 540/658-4450.
