Authorities seek help in unsolved slaying from 1982

The Virginia State Police and Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office are seeking the public’s help in solving an unsolved slaying from 1982.

Below is the information released today.

The Virginia State Police and Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office are hoping to jog area residents’ memories and glean new information in a 31-year-old unsolved

homicide. Not only are investigators trying to identify a young woman’s killer, but are also in need of identifying a young man associated with the victim.

Veronica Hepworth, of Fairfax County, was 20 years old when her partially-clothed body was discovered along a driveway in Loudoun County at 7 a.m. on Feb. 25, 1982.

She was noticed by a passerby driving along Route 50, about one-quarter of a mile east of Route 15 near Gilberts Corner.

Hepworth was last seen alive at approximately 1:30 a.m. that same morning at the Fancy Dancer Bar on U.S. 1 in Fairfax County. She was there with a group celebrating a friend’s birthday. It is still unknown if Ms. Hepworth left the bar alone and hitchhiked to get home or left with another person.

Based on tips and witness information, a red pickup truck, possibly a late 1960s or 1970s model, was seen near the farm where her body was left.

In order to advance the case, investigators are also hoping somebody can help identify a young man who was Hepworth’s last-known, serious boyfriend.

The man is depicted in a 1982 photograph. He would probably be in his 50s now. He is not necessarily a suspect in the case, but someone who could possibly help provide investigators with additional information related to Hepworth.

Anyone with information about Ms. Hepworth or the unidentified man in the photograph is encouraged to call the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Fairfax Field Office at 703-376-1690 or Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office at 703-737-8487. All calls will remain confidential.
