Fried everything at the fair
I was planning to write an encouraging post about how you can have a great time at the Virginia State Fair without busting your healthy eating plan. Then I took a look at the list of food offerings this year:
Despite what my coworkers believe (“Hide the donuts, the Healthy Life editor is coming!”), I love junk food as much as the next person. But wow, deep-fried Twinkies, apple dumpings, pork parfait, funnel cakes, pizza, chocolate-covered bacon, Italian sausage and garlic fries? My stomach hurts just reading those words. Krispy Kreme Sloppy Joes? You’re kidding, right?
My dietitian friends tell me you can have fun at the fair without making it a gorge-fest. Share portions (everybody can have a small handful of fries, right?), balance your intake (have a protein-rich breakfast before you head out to the fair) and don’t be hard on yourself if you overdo it a bit. Try to pick one thing you REALLY crave instead of going for broke. For example, you don’t need an elephant ear, a funnel canke AND mini donuts, do you? A chocolate-covered banana on a stick might satisfy your sweet tooth without too much damage, and the banana has potassium. I’m planning to have some kettle corn because I love it, but I’ll share a bag with my kids.
Dietitian Cassie had a great post about the Minnesota State Fair where she listed some healthy food options, but I don’t think many of those will be offered at our state fair. Still, she makes some good points:
