ALL-AREA BASEBALL CAPSULES

P MATTHEW NICKLES

Colonial Forge, sophomore

Nickles posted an impressive 6–0 mark in his first varsity season, striking out 51 with a 1.19 ERA for the second-place Eagles. He also hit .344 and drove in 13 runs.

 

P A.J. STEAD

Eastern View , Junior

The Cyclones’ ace was a key cog in their march to the Conference 22 titles. Among his eight wins were a no-hitter and five complete games. He fanned 76 with a 1.08 ERA.

 

C ALEX SMITH

Mountain View, Sophomore

The backbone of the Wildcats’ defense, this first-team all-Conference 15 underclassman was also one

of coach Craig Lopez’s top hitters with a .324 average.

 

IF COLE MIGLIORINI

Colonial Forge, Senior

The versatile Migliorini garnered all-conference and all-region honors. An All-Area pick for the second straight year, he compiled a team-best .452 batting average.

 

IF TYLER BAILEY

North Stafford, Senior

The Wolverines’ leadoff hitter was a fixture at shortstop, posting a .955 fielding percentage. He also batted .402 and scored 20 runs for the Conference 15 runners-up.

 

IF MIKE PATES

Riverbend, Junior

Pates made his presence felt as the Bears’ cleanup hitter. An all-Conference 4 first baseman, he batted .455, smacked seven doubles and collected 16 RBIs.

 

IF NATE YATES

Eastern View, Senior

A former outfielder, Yates was a stalwart as a middle infielder with his steady play. As the Cyclones’ leadoff hitter, he hit .438, scored 20 runs and stole 18 bases.

 

OF JERMAINE BUTLER

Culpeper, Senior

This all-conference outfielder fueled the Blue Devils’ winning season with his athleticism. A .392 hitter with three home runs, he also had three saves on the mound.

 

 

OF JORDI ESTES

King George, Senior

Estes was one of the big reasons for the Foxes’ turnaround. He was an all-region outfielder, scoring a team-high 27 runs while hitting .459 with three home runs.

 

OF DAVID LAIRD

Eastern View, Sophomore

A clutch player, Laird was a productive hitter and a reliable pitcher. He batted .523 and threw a one-hitter against defending state champion Sherando.

 

 

DH JASON MORGAN

Chancellor, Senior

This University of North Carolina recruit was the Conference 22 Player of the Year. In addition to winning five games and striking out 67, he hit .526 with 22 RBIs.

 

U ERIC BYRD

Riverbend, Senior

The Free Lance–Star’s Player of the Year sparked the Bears’ late–season drive to the playoffs with clutch performances in the Conference 4 tournament. He won six games and hit .362.

Eastern View 

Under Nobbs’ capable leadership, the Cyclones won 14 of their last 16 games and captured the Conference 22 regular-season and tournament titles, despite 12 new players on their roster.

IF Rasharrd Harris, Caroline So.— Cavs’ top hitter, .465 average.

IF Austin Meyer, North Stafford Jr.— .325 hitter, drove in 17 runs.

IF Chris Ortega, Chancellor Jr.— All-conference, 3 HRs, 19 RBIs.

OF Shawn Nickles, C. Forge Jr.— Team-best 24 RBIs, .328 hitter.

OF Mike Gallagher, Massaponax Sr.— Batted .381, scored 14 runs.

OF Jordan Beacorn, Stafford Sr.— Second team all-6A South pick.

DH Cody Bell, K. George Sr.— .464 avg. with 10 steals.

U Dylan Lutrell, Spotsylvania Jr.— 5–2, 1.79 ERA, 51 Ks.
