HIGH SCHOOL NOTEBOOK: Cougars’ Decatur bound for Shepherd

Courtland offensive lineman Dewey Decatur has committed to play at Division III Shepherd University in the fall.

The 6-foot-2, 275-pound Decatur was a two-year starter at tackle for the Cougars, and he was the top blocker in an offense in 2013 that produced three 1,000-yard running backs, a Fredericksburg-area first.

PLAYERS REMAIN COVETED

Colonial Forge quarterback Gary Jennings and Stafford offensive lineman Josh Ball continue to be hot commodities on the football recruiting circuit.

Ball, a 6–6, 312-pound rising junior, picked up scholarship offers from Duke, N.C. State and West Virginia last week, and Jennings, a 6–2, 190-pound rising senior, added an offer from the Naval Academy.

Jennings is up to 11 offers now, and Ball has seven.

BURRESS MAKING ROUNDS

Mountain View rising senior quarterback Elijah Burress has been frequenting the Division I camp circuit recently, and he has more camp visits planned this summer.

The 6–1, 205-pound Burress, a dual-threat quarterback who passed for 1,432 yards and nine touchdowns in 10 games last season, recently visited camps held at East Carolina, Maryland, West Virginia and Boston College.

“He’s been out throwing all over the place, so he’s on a lot of people’s radar,” Mountain View coach Lou Sorrentino said. “He’s had a really good offseason.”
