ALL-AREA WRESTING CAPSULES

WRESTLER OF THE YEAR

JOSUE BELTRAN JR. 

Mountain View junior

Beltran joined Swan as Mountain View’s first-ever individual state champions. He lost just once this season, wrestling a tough schedule on his way to the 120-pound Group 5A state title.

COACH OF THE YEAR

FRANK DeBERRY 

Mountain View

The Wildcats won the Conference 15 and 5A North team titles, while capping the school’s best-ever postseason showing at the 5A state tournament.

 

FIRST TEAM

DORIAN BRYANT

Brooke Point senior

Bryant was the 5A North region champion at 195 pounds. He also won the Conference 15 title and placed fourth at the Group 5A state tournament.

CHRIS CARTER

Colonial Forge senior

The 6A South region champion at 195 pounds also concluded his high school career with a Conference 4 title. He placed second at the Group 6A tournament.

MARC GAROFALO

Colonial Forge freshman

Garofalo had a banner first season. He rolled to the Conference 4 106-pound title, was second in the region and third in the state.

PATRICK GRAYSON

Colonial Forge junior

Grayson captured the Group 6A 220-pound state title with a 3–2 win in the finals. He was also the Conference 4 and 6A South region champion.

CAMERON HOUSTON

Stafford junior

Houston brought home the 6A South region 182-pound title for the Indians. He placed second in Conference 4 and qualified for the 6A state tournament.

AUSTIN JENKINS

Eastern View senior

Jenkins ended his standout high school career with a second-place finish at 145 pounds in the Group 4A

state tournament. He was also second in the 4A North.

JOSH NAIL

Colonial Forge sophomore

Nail—a state runner-up as a freshman—earned his first state title, winning the Group 6A 120-pound crown. He also won a region title.

BRYAN RAMEY

Eastern View junior

Ramey was the area’s only repeat state champion this year, earning the Group 4A 132-pound title. He was the Conference 22 and 4A North champion, too.

RUSSELL RAMSEY

Mountain View senior

Ramsey wrestled to a second-place finish at 152 pounds at the Group 5A state tournament. He was a 5A North and Conference 15 first-place finisher.

LOGAN SHURINA

Eastern View senior

The Conference 22 160-pound champion wrapped up his high school career by placing second at the Group 4A state tournament.

SEBASTIAN SILVA

Stafford junior

Silva moved up a weight class and brought home 6A South and Conference 4 heavyweight championships, and was the Group 6A state runner-up.

JEFF STONE

Colonial Forge junior

The Conference 4 138-pound champion wrestled to a second-place finish in the 6A South and lost a close 2–1 decision in the 6A state championship.

JARED SWAN

Mountain View senior

Swan was the area’s only undefeated wrestler this year, finishing 55–0. His last high school match won him the Group 5A 170-pound championship.
