GIRLS BASKETBALL NOTEPAD: Holland’s 1,000th point a relief to all
Michelle Darley became a little worried as her Colonial Forge girls basketball team struggled to put away Stafford in a Conference 4 contest last Friday.
Darley wasn’t necessarily concerned that the Eagles wouldn’t eventually pull out a victory (they outscored the Indians 33–11 in the fourth quarter to win 70–43).
She was fretting over standout senior shooting guard Kenya Holland scoring the three points necessary to reach the 1,000-point milestone for her career.
Holland wasn’t aware of the looming feat, but friends, family and members of her church were on hand to witness it.
She finally hit a 3-pointer in the closing minutes, and Darley exhaled.
“I was probably the most excited person in the world that she got that,” Darley said. “If anybody is worthy of 1,000 points, it’s her. She’s so unselfish, sometimes too unselfish.”
Holland, who will play for Princeton next season, finished with six points. The game was characteristic of much of her career. Holland was willing to sacrifice her own scoring for team success.
Holland’s scoring average is down to 9.6 points per game this season (the lowest since her freshman year) as the Eagles have strived to become a balanced team.
Darley said Holland will reach the 500-assist milestone soon, and she’ll celebrate that achievement as much as the 1,000 points.
“She’d much rather give an assist than score,” Darley said. “So that is a big deal, too.”
