HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING NOTEPAD

That’s why we update these ranking every week: Sometimes it takes a few weeks to get really dialed in.

This week, the wrestling notepad focuses on fixing things we feel better about after a week of feedback. And nothing awakens the email like declarative statements by some know-nothing reporter proclaiming one wrestler better than another.

We remain capable of mistakes. So if you see something you think we missed, email the wrestling pad at jrice@free lancestar.com

THIRD AT 106

Last week we listed D.J. Ahalt and Cliff Conway tied for the third spot at 106, because the two have been back and forth wrestling varsity for the Cougars.

The last result we saw from Courtland had Ahalt at 106, so that’s who we’ll go with him at No. 3 for now.

A 113-POUND REBOOT

We told you there were some weights last week we were less sure about.

That included 113, where we’ve made two changes.

We still like Forge’s Seth Brodie at No. 1, but we’ll change the follow-up spots to King George’s Kraig Johnson and Courtland’s Doug Palacios.

We’re told Johnson is staying at 113, and he’s got a win this year against Palacios.

126: CERTAIN UNCERTAINTY

There will always be weight classes I feel less strongly about.

This week, that list includes 126.

We’re told Bret Shurina should be our No. 1 here, and given his results, we agree.

WELCOME BACK, JEFF STONE

Jeff Stone is wrestling again—he had a good weekend for Colonial Forge at the Virginia Duals.

As promised, we’re moving Stone into our No. 1 spot at 138.

We were also shorting Nathaniel Aldiva from Eastern View, so he’s going to slide into No. 3.

WORST. MISTAKE. EVER.

Austin Jenkins from Eastern View should have been in our top three, at least, and that was a poor decision.

We shuffled him up to the top at 145 pounds. He and Forge’s Harris haven’t wrestled this year, but Jenkins did beat him last season.

DEUTEL vs. RAMSEY

At 152, someone (and I’m not saying who) recorded a result wrong in the wrestling notepad’s super computer, so we fixed that error and reshuffled the pile.

Josh Deutel and Russel Ramsey will see each other this year at some point, and it’ll probably be a good match.

NO CHANGE AT 160, BUT

We didn’t touch 160 this week, but there should be some good matchups in today’s conference duals (Conference 15 at Freedom, Conference 4 at Riverbend).

We’re looking forward to the result between Forge’s Adam Sinnott and Riverbend’s Alex Miller, who is certainly on our radar to be in the top three.

TUCKER AT 170

We’re told King George’s Jacob Tucker is going to land at 170, a spot where he’s had some success this year.

That (obviously) leads to a change at 182, where we had Tucker second last week.

As for 170, we left our picks unchanged for now, but Tucker certainly has a top-three résumé.

WHICH TAKES US TO CHANGES AT 182

So we moved Tucker out of here, and that opens up one spot. But also, we think Stafford’s Cameron Houston maybe slides down from 195 to 182 and stays there. We’re going to leave Houston at 195 here, but if he were ranked at 182, we think we’d have him second, and we think the matchup with Forge’s Robert Winters would be a good one.

CALLING ALL HEAVYWEIGHTS

For all the feedback last week’s notepad received, we didn’t hear a word from the big guys, a weight which we’re still really unsettled on.

We didn’t see a reason to change the top three this week, but if someone can string together a chain of results that prove us wrong, we want to hear about it.
