HIGH SCHOOL GYMNASTICS NOTEPAD: Winterfest meet draws state powers
Colonial Forge’s annual Winterfest Invitational represents the best regular-season opportunity to see Stafford County’s high school gymnasts competing against some other strong teams from around the state.
The 12-team meet is Saturday at Colonial Forge. Competition begins at 11 a.m. and awards are expected just after 4 p.m. All five Stafford County schools will compete.
The host Eagles are coming off a week of strong performances. Colonial Forge was second last Wednesday in the weekly district meet, then finished just behind first-place Kellem at Saturday’s Great Bridge Invitational Green Division.
“We still did really well—all the girls did,” said Forge coach Kim Thornburg, whose team didn’t have its full roster Saturday.
Junior Shannon Lea placed in the top four on vault, bars and beam and was second in the all-around. Freshman Sydney Nickens was fifth and senior Haley Cooper sixth in all-around.
Brooke Point’s Alysia Gray won the vault and bars, and teammate Kaya Razor was the all-around champion.
Colonial Forge didn’t have freshman Lexy Holbrook, a Level 8 club gymnast who won the Wednesday all-around title last week. She was first on vault with an impressive 94.425 and won the all-around with a combined 36.6.
“We’ve got some depth,” Thornburg said. “We’ve got three freshmen that are club gymnasts and hopefully we’re going to have them the next four years.”
Stafford had three event winners: Ashley Hinton on bars (9.150), Brynne Reeves on beam (9.20) and Naomi Jones on floor (9.475). Reeves was second and Bria O’Kelly third in the all-around.
As a team, the Eagles were second to the Indians—143.075 to 136.825. Thornburg said she thinks her team can make up the difference this season.
“We’ve got the skill,” she said. “We just have to have the attitude behind it. I’m very confident we can do it.”
Also this week, Brooke Point will host Mountain View, Colonial Forge and Stafford at 7 p.m. Wednesday. North Stafford has a bye for the midweek events.
