ALL-AREA FOOTBALL TEAM

FIRST-TEAM OFFENSE

QB JAY SCROGGINS

James Monroe junior

The Jackets’ best offensive threat threw for 2,812 yards with 25 touchdowns and led James Monroe to its third straight state championship game.

U DAMEN DANIEL 

Colonial Forge senior

Daniel led all area quarterbacks with 869 rushing yards on 206 carries and was also effective through the air, topping 1,000 yards with 11 touchdowns.

RB VON PURVIS

North Stafford senior

The Fredericksburg area’s 2013 rushing champion finished with 2,061 yards and 31 touchdowns. He scored three or more times in seven different games.

RB ANTON JENKINS

Courtland junior

The Cougars’ fullback had 1,254 rushing yards this year, best in the Battlefield District. He scored a team-best 27 touchdowns, helping Courtland to the playoffs.

RB KENDRICK KUBE 

Eastern View junior

Kube was the area’s second-leading rusher with 1,459 yards and 20 touchdowns, leading a high-scoring Eastern View offense to the playoffs.

WR QUINTON GRAY

Mountain View senior

Gray concluded his outstanding high school career for the Wildcats by leading the Commonwealth District in receptions (69) and receiving yards (1,001).

WR KEYSHAWN JOHNSON

Caroline junior

Johnson enjoyed a breakout season in the Cavaliers’

wide-open offense. He led the region with nearly 1,200 receiving yards on 56 catches.

WR JARMAL BEVELS

James Monroe senior

A University of Richmond recruit, the 6-foot-3 receiver led the area in receptions (74) and finished with 1,155 yards and 11 touchdowns through the air.

OL TOM VUCKOVICH 

North Stafford senior

A 5A–North all-region and all-Conference-15 first-team pick, Vuckovich was the top blocker for the Fredericksburg area’s leading running back.

OL GREG BROWN

Massaponax senior

At 5-10, 283 pounds, Brown—an all-Conference 15 first-team pick—helped anchor the offensive line for the Panthers’ potent triple option.

OL MASON MADELINE

Mountain View senior

An 5A–North all-region second teamer and team captain, Madeline played a key part on the line for a dynamic offensive attack.

OL GRANT GARZA

Colonial Forge sophomore

In his second season as a starter, the 6–2, 220-pound tackle helped push Colonial Forge into the state

semifinals for the first time

in school history.

OL DEWEY DECATUR

Courtland senior

The Cougars’ two-year starter at tackle was their best blocker in an offense that produced three 1,000-yard backs, a Fredericksburg-area first.

KR GORDON COLLINS

Mountain View senior

The Conference 15 offensive player of the year, Collins returned two kickoffs for TDs and rushed for 1,284 yards and 16 TDs.

 

FIRST-TEAM DEFENSE

DL JAE’WUAN HORTON 

North Stafford senior

Horton was a force along the Wolverines defensive line. Among his 76 solo tackles were 17 sacks, and he forced five fumbles.

DL STEVEN SOBCZAK

Massaponax senior

This 5A–North all-region first-teamer was one of the area’s most dominant defenders. He finished with 21 TFLs and recovered a pair of fumbles.

DL ANTONIO WYNN–COLEMAN

James Monroe sophomore

Wynn–Coleman led the Jackets with eight sacks and blocked three kicks this year—including a crucial extra point in the state semifinal game.

DL ANDREW JEAN–CHARLES 

Colonial Forge senior

Jean–Charles had 164 combined tackles, including 13 tackles and 20 tackles for loss. He was a Conference 4 first-team selection.

LB GUS LITTLE

Massaponax junior

Little earned 5A–North all-region first-team honors after leading the Panthers in solo (63) and total tackles (104). He was also all-Conference 15.

LB COREY HENDERSON

King George senior

The Foxes’ best defender compiled an astounding 32 tackles behind the line of scrimmage with eight sacks and three forced fumbles.

LB NAKIA THOMAS

North Stafford senior

The Wolverines’ second-leading tackler finished with 94 total stops on defense this season. He also had three sacks and forced three fumbles.

DB JORDI ESTES

King George senior

Also a strong offensive weapon for the Foxes, Estes was a ball-hawking cornerback. He led the Fredericksburg area with eight interceptions this fall.

DB KYLE TALLEY 

Courtland senior

Also Courtland’s best receiver (18 catches, 499 yards, 6 TDs), Talley was the Cougars’ top corner, finishing with five regular-season interceptions.

DB DANIEL EZEAGWU

Colonial Forge senior

A versatile weapon on offense, defense and special teams, Ezeagwu finished with 128 tackles, an interception, and 12 sacks for Colonial Forge.

DB DONTEY BRANCH

Mountain View senior

The Wildcats’ 6–1, 165-pound safety earned all-Conference 15 first-team honors after making 130 tackles, two interceptions and three fumble recoveries.

U A.J. FORBES 

Massaponax senior

Forbes was the coaches’ pick for first-team defensive utility player on the 5A–North team. He made 32 solo tackles this fall and also had three interceptions.

P JOEY SLYE

North Stafford senior

Slye averaged 35.6 yards per punt and was an all-region pick. He was also an all-region linebacker,

finishing with a team-high 101 tackles.

PR TONY BARNETT

Massaponax senior

Barnett returned two punts for touchdowns this year, including a 94-yarder against Riverbend. He also led Massaponax with seven touchdown catches.

PK DAVID DIT

James Monroe senior

Dit surpassed the Fredericksburg-area record with 18 field goals. He also booted 43 extra points and consistently drilled kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks.
