HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Two local teams bring home three titles

The Stafford boys cross country team captured the 6A–South Region team title on Thursday at Bells Mill Park in Chesapeake.

The Indians totaled 60 points led by individual champions Joey Abbatiello (16:10.45), who finished nearly nine seconds ahead of the runner-up.

On the girls side, there wasn’t a team championship for a local squad, but Colonial Forge’s Megan Rebholz (18:43.59) won the individual title, outdistancing the runner-up by nearly seven seconds.

The top six teams and top 10 runners not on those teams advance to next week’s state meet. The top 15 individuals were named all-region.

The state meet will be next Friday at Great Meadow in The Plains.

GIRLS MEET

Team scores: 1. Ocean Lakes 35; 2. Cosby 86; 3. Colonial Forge 98; 4. Tallwood 133; 5. Stafford 139; 6. Woodbridge 150.

Top 15 individual (local): 1. Megan Rebholz (CF) 18:43.59; 12. Frances Morales (CF) 19:46.12; 19. Alexa Putka (St) 20:09.72.

BOYS MEET

Team scores: 1. Stafford 60; 2. Landstown 78; 3. Ocean Lakes 90; 4. Colonial Forge 133; 5. Cosby 151; 6. Grassfield 173; 9. Riverbend 212.

Top 15 individual (local): 1. Joey Abbatiello (St) 16:10.45; 6. Ian Higgins (St) 16:34.56; 14. Tanner Wentlandt (St) 16:50.55; 15. Matt Nielson (CF) 16:50.95; 36. Bruce Garth (Rb) 17:24.70.

CROSS COUNTRY

1A–EAST REGIONAL MEET AT EASTERN STATE HOSPITAL

The top six teams and top 10 runners not on those teams advance to next week’s state meet. The top 15 individuals were named all-region.

Washington & Lee’s Kathryn Beddoo (21:34.15) was the top girls finisher in seventh place, while the Eagles’ Alec Westall (17:41.10) led the boys with a ninth-place finish.

GIRLS MEET

Team scores: 1. Rappahannock County 53; 2. Mathews 55; 3. Northumberland 97; 4. West Point 99; 5. Washington & Lee 116; 6. Lancaster 117.

Top 15 individual (local): 1. Julia Wood (RC) 19:12.77; 7. Kathryn Beddoo (WL) 21:34.15; 15. Emma Oliver (WL) 22:52.95.

BOYS MEET

Team scores: 1. Mathews 65; 2. Altavista 68; 3. Parry McCluer 106; 4. Washington & Lee 109; 5. Rappahannock County 131; 6. Lancaster 132.

Top 15 individual (local): 1. Sean Farney (Al) 16:35.17; 9. Alec Westall (WL) 17:41.10; 13. Hasan Gill (WL) 17:59.13; 14. Jacob Daiger (WL) 18:03.98.

 

VOLLEYBALL

KETTLE RUN 3, SPOTSYLVANIA 0

Kettle Run earned the Conference 27 championship with a 25–11, 25–14, 25–16 win over visiting Spotsylvania.

The Cougars (24–1) host William Monroe in a 3A–East Regional quarterfinal on Tuesday, while the Knights (14–7) travel to Loudoun Valley for a 6 p.m. match the same night.

3A EAST REGIONAL MEET AT CULPEPER H.S.

The top six teams and top 10 runners not on those teams advance to next week’s state meet. The top 15 individuals were named all-region.

Culpeper’s Aaliyah Cyrus (20:57) was the top local girls finisher with a 12th-place showing. Spotsylvania’s Sawyer Czarnecki came in 19th place at 17:40 to lead all area boys.

GIRLS MEET

Team scores: 1. Loudoun Valley 67; 2. Brentsville 79; 3. Lafayette 100; 4. Warren County 111; 5. York 138; 6. Warhill 138; 8. James Monroe 166; 9. Culpeper 192.

Individual 15 (x–local state qualifiers): 1. Miriam Buscher (Warhill) 19:32; x-12. Aaliyah Cyrus (Cu) 20:57; x-15. Kellie Hyde (Cu) 21:17; x-27. Erica Denham (JM) 21:55; 42. Haylee McGuire (Sp) 22:49.
