5A-NORTH FIELD HOCKEY: Title gives Wildcats momentum

The test gets harder from here on for Mountain View’s field hockey team. But for now, the Wildcats are content to celebrate a dominant week and a region title.

Mountain View beat Orange on Thursday, 8–0, in the 5A–North championship game. The Wildcats outscored their three region tournament opponents 26–1 and have a head of steam built for the state semifinals next Friday against either Lee–Davis or Gloucester at the National Training Center in Virginia Beach.

It’s hard to find fault with how Mountain View played this week, except that the Wildcats could be considered untested headed into their most pressure-packed matchups of the season.

“I don’t want to take anything away from how we’re playing,” Mountain View coach Pattie Sullivan said. “But we want that competition because we know we’re going to see the best of the teams. And it’s hard to just be going against yourself in practice and keep up to par.”

Three Mountain View players had two goals each against the Hornets—Morgan LaRowe, Olivia Hubert and Emily Johnson. Morgan Lowry and Gretchen Geisler also scored. Bailey McCarthy had a pair of assists.

The Wildcats didn’t allow a corner or a shot on goal by Orange.

To prepare for next week’s action on the turf of the NTC, the Wildcats will seek out as many practices on the surface as possible. They’ll work at the Fredericksburg Field House, at Smith Lake Park and at the NTC late next week.

“We’re definitely mentally prepared,” Sullivan said. “Physically, we’ll work hard this week. We’ve got to put a couple of things together and perfect our corners.”

Gloucester and Lee–Davis play the 5A–South championship tonight at the training center. The winner will play Orange in next week’s semifinals, while the loser faces Mountain View.
