FIELD HOCKEY NOTEPAD: Fog of pairings dissipating as playoffs near
Understanding new alignments, districts, conferences and regions has been headache-inducing, but the picture should become more clear this week as the regular season concludes.
Conference tournaments begin for many local schools Thursday. Here’s a look at the postseason around the region:
CONF. 4 (6A–SOUTH)
Stafford is the No. 1 seed with a bye to Tuesday’s semifinals. The Indians will host the winner of the Woodbridge–Forest Park quarterfinal.
Colonial Forge’s win against Riverbend locked up the No. 2 seed for the Eagles. They’ll host Gar–Field while the Bears play at home against Hylton in Thursday’s semis.
The Conference 4 semifinal winners will advance to the 6A–South tournament.
CONF. 15 (5A–NORTH)
It’s a four-team tournament with the top two finishers advancing to the 5A–North playoffs.
Mountain View is the No. 1 seed and will host a semifinal at 5 p.m. Thursday.
Brooke Point, Massaponax and North Stafford are the other four teams contending for a region tournament spot.
CONF. 16 (5A–NORTH)
Just one of the three Conference 16 teams makes the region tournament.
Albemarle and Patrick Henry will play a semifinal on Oct. 29, and Orange will host the winner on Oct. 31 in the conference final.
CONF. 22 (4A–NORTH)
The regular season concludes Thursday and the conference quarterfinals are Monday.
Eastern View and Chancellor should have byes to the semifinals (scheduled for Tuesday) with the highest-seeded team hosting each game.
King George and Courtland should play home quarterfinals Monday.
Two conference 22 teams advance to the 4A–North field.
CONF. 23 (4A–NORTH)
James Monroe will be the No. 1 seed when the eight-team Conference 23 tournament begins Monday.
The only drama remaining is for the No. 3 and 4 seeds. If Monticello beats Western Albemarle and Albemarle, it will pass Culpeper for third and the Blue Devils will be fourth.
Charlottesville is No. 2. The rest of the seeds are set, regardless how the regular season finishes. They are (in order): Western Albemarle, Kettle Run, Spotsylvania and Louisa.
The top two Conference 23 teams advance to the 4A–North playoffs.
