HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Sims and Bears take sting out of Hornets
Zac Sims carried the ball 12 times for 171 yards with two touchdowns to help Riverbend defeat Orange 42–7.
The Bears never trailed in the game. They moved the ball well on the ground and through the air in the first half.
The lone scoring play from the Hornets came on a 66-yard touchdown pass from Garret Johnson to Keith Ellis which narrowed the score to 14–7 midway through the second quarter.
The Bears then produced four unanswered touchdown drives to seal the victory.
Bears quarterback Eric Byrd did all his damage early in the game, throwing for 120 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. Chris Pritchett scored on both of his two catches for a total of 91 yards.
The story of the game was Riverbend’s rushing attack, which gained 374 yards.
Dakota Sexton picked up 74 hard-earned yards, and freshman TyJuan Garbutt ran the ball well late in the game.
“He’s going to be something special,” said Riverbend head coach Tony DeMarco, of Garbutt. “We have a good core of backs. Zac Sims has great vision. He sees everything. You only have one football and it’s hard to move it around. We got some people that can catch, [Eric] Byrd can throw it around, and we’re trying to stay as balanced as we can.”
Riverbend (4–0) now turns its attention to Brooke Point.
“We always talk about how it’s one game at a time, and right now we’re 100 percent focused on Brooke Point,” DeMarco said. “They always have good athletes. We’ll start breaking down tape this weekend and try to come up with a good game plan for them.”
