HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Purvis sparks Wolverines’ win

Perhaps no one has a better perspective on next week’s North Stafford–Briar Woods showdown than Mo Hampton.

His Brooke Point Black–Hawks have faced both of the Division 5A–North powers, who square off next Friday in Ashburn. Briar Woods beat Brooke Point 63–13 in their opener two weeks ago, and the Wolverines beat the Black–Hawks 44–6 Friday night behind senior Von Purvis’ six touchdowns.

“If [North Stafford] can run the ball, they’ll be fine,” Hampton said. “It’ll be good teams, but I’m not about to make any predictions.”

The Wolverines (3–0) would be wise to get the ball into Purvis’ hands often. On Friday night, the senior scored on runs of 53, 4, 6 and 47 yards and returned a blocked punt and an unblocked one for touchdowns.

“He’s pretty dynamic, obviously,” North Stafford coach Joe Mangano said. “He’s tough, he runs hard, he’s fast and he’s a gamer. He has a nose for the end zone.”

Purvis’ heroics came in handy on a night when Brooke Point (0–3) actually outgained the Wolverines in yards from scrimmage, 252–164. But four lost fumbles and the special-teams issues cost the Black–Hawks dearly.

Tyler Bailey smothered Bryan Edelstein’s punt barely two minutes into the game, and Purvis scooped it up at the 3 and scored.

The Black–Hawks immediately answered with their best drive of the night. Gerimi Parrett made a leaping catch of Donovan Fobbs’ pass between two defenders for a 31-yard gain, and Fobbs hit Chez De–Borous for a  35-yard touchdown five plays later to make it 7–6.

But the Black–Hawks never really threatened again, and the Wolverines relied on their defense and Purvis’ legs.

North Stafford hasn’t been severely tested in any of its first three games. That will change next week against Briar Woods, which won the past two Division 4 state titles before moving up to Division 5 this year.

“This game is behind us,” Purvis said. “We need to go back to practice and tighten up a few things.

“If we beat Briar Woods, we’re really going to prove a point.”
