HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Eagles overcome miscues for 2OT win

Special teams were a problem throughout Friday night’s game for Colonial Forge, but a standout defensive effort in the second half and overtime helped the Eagles escape with a 34–28 win over visiting Hermitage in double overtime.

After trailing 21–7 at the half, the Panthers (1–1) came out on fire in the second half only to see two consecutive drives come to an end with fumbles inside Colonial Forge territory.

Eventually Hermitage scored, cutting its deficit to 21–13, after missing the extra point, with 3:20 left in the third quarter.

Hermitage forced the Eagles (2–1) to punt on their ensuing series and Johntae Wilson raced in and blocked the kick. Murtaza Abbasi scooped in up and scored from 13 yards out. Rashad Robinson ran in the 2-conversion to tie the game at 21–21 with 1:59 left in the third period.

After a 2-yard Colonial Forge punt that was returned to the Eagles’ 30-yard line, the home team’s defense came up huge, stopping Heritage on the 1-yard line on three straight plays with under three minutes to go.

“I knew our defense could do it, I wasn’t putting my head down because I knew we could do it,” said senior Daniel Ezeagwu. “I said, ‘Coach, if we can do this we can win.’ That is what was in my mind.”

In overtime, Nathaniel Roscoe scored on the Panthers’ first play to give the visitors a 28–21 lead.

Damon Daniel answered on the Eagles’ first series and the miss-hit extra point slipped just inside the left upright to tie the game, 28–28.

Hermitage thought the kick went wide and rushed the field, but were overruled after the officials had a brief conference to confirm the call.

Daniel hit Justin Brown on the next Eagles’ series and then the defense shut the door on four straight plays to give the home team the win.

“We got the extra point blocked, so we’re up by six. If they score and kick the extra point they go home the winner, so we [had] to keep them out of the end zone,” Colonial Forge coach Bill Brown said. “We don’t have a choice, and our kids did that.”
